Women and Girls in Family Films
So my mom passed on this Newsweek article to me entitled “The Shame of Family Films”. Every adult who cares about girls (which is all of you I’m guessing) should read this article. It’s a great summary of research on female characters in “family films” and the subtle (and not-so-subtle) messages these films communicate to viewers.
Here’s the paragraph I keep thinking about: a few years ago Geena Davis portrayed the U.S. President in a TV show called “Commander in Chief”. According to the Newsweek article, “A study commissioned by the advertising group Kaplan Thaler showed that 68 percent of those who watched Commander in Chief were more likely to take a female president seriously. Yes, even though it was just a TV show. Thats the point of all thiswhat we see on our screens matters.”
What we see on our screens does indeed matter - for us, for boys, and for girls too.
