Time to Talk About Digital Bullying

One third of young people have had rumors spread about them online or via text.

17% have been threatened or manipulated online or via text.

One third have sent or received nude photos on their cell phones or online, and nearly 1 in 5 have passed a sext on to someone else.

These and other digital realities have led to the creation of MTVs Thin Line campaign. Thin Line is on a mission to subvert sexting, digital bullying, disrespect, and manipulation between teens. Meanwhile, in the wake of the recent cyberbullying-spurred Rutgers student suicide, MTV partners with Brittany Snow on Love is Louder, another anti-bullying campaign. A recent Newsweek article offers a differentand challengingcommentary on whether bullies (cyber and otherwise) should be locked up.

Whatever you think about these approaches, I bet the kids you know are dealing with at least some form of bullyingwhether directed at them or someone they know. How are you talking about it? How are you helping kids navigate these challenging waters? If there was ever a ripe season to bring up this sometimes-touchy issue, this is it.
