"Poverty is a business"
Last week I read this New York Times article about Plumpy’nut, a paste made out of peanut butter that can really help in the fight against poverty and malnourishment. I’ve heard of products like these before and while they offer great hope for solving dire problems, this article highlights some of the tensions of profit motives behind these innovations.
So this article offers great hope but also a reminder of the mixed motives of folks involved in this work. As one pediatrician in the article remarks, “Poverty is a business.”
This article both disturbs me and gives me great hope.
