Great ideas for parents in ministry
“I’m far better with other people’s kids than my own.”
I’ll never forget this confession from a youth pastor at one of our Sticky Faith Cohort summits. After he opened up about how challenging it can be to pour into your own kids after you’ve poured into other kids all day, the floodgates opened. Several in the room agreed, confessing how their emotional, physical and even spiritual fatigue from being in ministry affected their parenting. (You can read more about this conversation in our guest blog post at Youth Specialties this week.)
That’s why I’m so glad that Carey Nieuwhof will be joining us for a special Sticky Faith webcast on Tuesday, June 11 at 10 am PST geared for leaders who are also parents. Carey’s the lead pastor and founding pastor of Connexus Community Church and also the author of a fantastic book, Leading Change Without Losing It.
I first met Carey thanks to our mutual friend, Reggie Joiner from reThink, and have been consistently impressed with him as a father, leader, and follower of Jesus.
A story our team likes to share during our Sticky Faith seminars actually comes from Carey’s own experience as a parent. When his son turned 13, he and his son invited five different men they respected to each spend a day with the son. The goal was to surround the young teenager with a group of quality men who that boy knew was on “his team”. After each had spent a day with his son, Carey invited all five men over for dinner to reflect with his son on what they had experienced and learned. Not only was Carey’s son touched, but so were the five men.
As our son, Nathan, gets ready to turn 13 this September, Dave and I are planning on doing something similar. So already our family has been impacted by Carey’s wise parenting!
Whatever the age of your children, we hope you join us for a great webcast with Carey.
Watch the webcast here:
Carey is the lead and founding pastor of Connexus Community Church and has been serving in ministry since 1995. He is our primary communicator on Sunday mornings, and one of his key passions is to see people’s lives changed as they encounter Christ. He and his wife, Toni, live north of Barrie with their two sons. You will hear Carey say that his family outshines him in skiing, mountain biking, hiking, water skiing and more, but he does everything he can to keep up with them! Carey might also be one of the funniest people we know. Check out Carey’s personal blog at www.careynieuwhof.com
