DVULI - a great training opportunity

Kara Powell | Apr 13, 2011

Today I am headed home from Orlando, having just spent the last 24 hours at the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative National Conference. DVULI is a 15 month training program for some of our nation’s sharpest urban leaders; every year, 12 youth workers from 5 specially chosen cities are invited to this highly-interactive, intentional and values-based training program. We at FYI are now partnering with DVULI so that if interested, DVULI folks can apply to receive academic credit for their work, credit which easily applies toward our Urban Youth Ministry Certificate program.

This history section on the DVULI website explains the vision of Richard and Helen DeVos (Richard was the co-founder of the highly successful Amway Corporation), who invited their four adult children and their spouses to develop a philanthropic program based on their common interests. Training leaders who work with urban youth emerged as that common interest. Thus DVULI was born.

There are likely few (if any) reading this blog who have the resources of the DeVos family. But whether you are a gazillionaire or living hand to mouth, the principle of inviting kids (whether they be your own or kids in your youth group) to work together to identify a justice cause can translate to you. How can serving together, or deciding together how to give away particular funds, deepen your own and your kids’ commitment to Deep Justice? Maybe you could start that conversation sometime soon…
