“How many kids showed up at youth group?”
“How full was the service last weekend?”
“How large is your ministry?”
If you’re a leader, you’ve likely encountered these questions before—perhaps from someone who oversees your work, or perhaps worse, a ministry leader you just met at a conference. Furthermore, you may have felt tempted to inflate the answers. Somehow, more must be better.
You’re not alone.
But according to more than a decade of research, we’ve discovered that attendance doesn’t tell the whole story. In fact, unless your ultimate goal is to get as many people in your seats as possible, attendance fails to fully reflect whether we are fulfilling the mission of our church or ministry.
So how might we measure success without just relying on the weekly headcount? What if we could determine new metrics that help us better track the important progress we want to see?
