Adversity Can Make Us Stronger

A new study from the University of Buffalo recently found that facing a few tough life circumstances really does make us stronger.

Looking specifically at mental health and well-being outcomes, this longitudinal study found that people who experienced some adverse events fared better than those with high adversity or those with no adversity at all.

I dont know if the study also looked at spiritual outcomes, but part of our College Transition Project has been to understand more about the ways challenges stretch and potentially strengthen faith. While we dont have definitive answers, this adversity research adds to our hunch along similar lines.

For more on resilience in the face of adversity, check out the articles by Jesse Oakes and Maria Drews here on our site.

I know I dont like pain, and I dont want it for my own kids or the kids I serve in youth ministry. And yetthe absence of pain often also means the absence of growth.
