About Huck

This novel cannot be made colorblind.
Thats one of the many provocative and emotion-laden quotes popping up in response to the new controversy over revising Mark Twains classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, predominantly to remove the 219 occurrences of the N-word.
You doubtless have your own opinion over whether the books use of the word is a necessary teaching tool or a hurtful roadblock. But Im not asking you to post your opinion. Im asking usme includedto use this as another great opportunity to talk to friends of other races to get their perspective. In this case, especially African Americans. If youre leading a youth ministry, use this as a conversation starter to talk about race. Research last year pointed out that most families dont talk about race at home, so you could also use this as an opportunity for your family if you have teenagers in your house.
Next week Karas going to be blogging about a new book that explores research on how race impacts kids in America. I thought this news piece might raise your interest for what she learned.
