24-Year-Old Mayor: The Story of a Community

FYI friend Rudy Carrasco recently featured this story on his blog about the new 24-year-old mayor of Ithaca, New York. Mayor Svante Myrick experienced homelessness as a child, as well as a drug-abusing father.
So what happened?
In part, a mother who relentlessly loved and supported her kids. In part, a smart kid who worked hard despite tough circumstances. And in part, the adults in the community around them. In the local news interview on Myrick, he gives credit this way:
This is not the story of a self-made man. This is the story of a community that conspired together to raise a child.
How many young people do you know who need a community that is willing to conspire to raise them?
