Much of the loudest commentary from this year’s Grammy awards has been about who didn’t win. Huge names left the show disappointed, along with their fans. Social media allowed for public commentary dealing with outrage, surprise, and celebration.
The awards aren’t based on a popularity contest. It’s an organized & complicated process that involves multiple rounds of voting with a limited number of experts. But after the show, the winners do receive mainstream notoriety and instant popularity along with those sweet trophies.
So who is the Arcade Fire? Who is Esperanza Spaulding? If you don’t know, they’re now Grammy-winning, talented, mainstream artists. 2011 is their year as top-dog in this generation’s perhaps most widespread forum: music.
