I’ve been having an interesting e.mail discussion with some Fuller faculty colleagues as we at Fuller are moving more and more into distributed (aka online) learning.  Yippee!

One faculty member said something interesting recently in an e.mail:   “Interactivity is the key to good learning”.

That’s a strong statement.  Do you agree?   I’d probably soften it to something more like:  “Interactivity is one of the keys to good learning”.  (The researcher in me rarely talks about THE key to something; life is usually more complicated and nuanced.)

If I was to ask your students what percent of the communication you have with them is interactive, what would they say?

What would you what that percent to be?

My students would say that 100% of my teaching is interactive. While it can be a little unsettling to throw out a question to a group of teens with no idea what the response will be…it is, in my opinion, one of the most effective ways to teach them. It’s incredible to see through the interaction that your students are grappling with God’s word and how to apply it in their life. I can remember however, the many awkward silences and blank stares I received when I started teaching this way a couple of years ago. If this is new to your group, stick with it. Eventually the kids will catch on, and you’ll have to make more time in your lesson for discussion and comments.
