In Relational Leadership: A Biblical Model for Influence and Service, Walt Wright from the Max De Pree Center for Leadership at Fuller, describes a human resource development model called the CARE Plan.  CARE stands for:

Clarify expectations

Agree on objectives

Review progress

Equip for performance and growth

Whether a paid staff member of a volunteer, I think this plan has great merit.

Do our folks know what they are supposed to be doing in general?

Do they have specific goals or objectives?

How regularly do you meet with them to review how they are doing?

What type of training are you giving them to increase their skills?

All 4 of those are important steps.  If one is missing, it’s easy to see how a leader could lose some of their effectiveness.  For those of us who supervise others, how much CARE are we showing them?
