Spiritual Pathways

When I was dating my now-husband, I quickly realized his spirituality looked different than mine.  I felt closest to Jesus sitting down, reading my Bible and journaling.  He felt closest to Jesus hammer in hand, helping build a house with a group of people in Mexico.

In God Is Closer Than You Think, John Ortberg writes about different spiritual pathways that help us experience God’s presence:

  1. Intellectual pathway
  2. Relational pathway
  3. Serving pathway
  4. Worship pathway
  5. Activist pathway
  6. Contemplative pathway
  7. Creation pathway

While John encourages us each to have some involvement in each of the pathways, we probably have a few that feel most natural to us.  For me, it’s #2, #4, and #6.  For my husband, it’s #1, #3, and #7.

I think it’s time we move past simply encouraging our students to have quiet times.  Those are good things, but there are lots of different ways to experience God’s presence.

Myra Perrine has a book that also looks at differnet ways we connect with God. I think there are nine. Now I am interested if they are similar, I’ll check it out

Please let me know, Jude. It’d make a great blog post if you’d be open to writing it. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

I remember John explaining these in a study we did years ago in our small group. The study was called Ordinary Day With Jesus. I remember this moment of freedom when I learned that I didn’t have to and shouldn’t expect to encounter God like everyone else. Nor should anyone else be expected to encounter God like I did naturally. This really impacted the way I taught and led others. Before this I tried to “help” others experience God in the way I was accustomed to experiencing Him. Today I try to help people discover how they most naturally connect with God and then challenge them to explore the other ways as well. Thanks for reminding me of this Kara. I think I’m going to go back and reread this book again.
