I’m reading God Is Closer Than You Think by John Ortberg.  It’s a great book with lots of good quotes. Like:

“The most frequent promise in the Bible is ‘I will be with you.’”

John quotes Frederick Buechner: “There is no event so commonplace but that God is present within it, always hiddenly, always leaving you room to recognize him or not…because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace”.

Regarding Mary and Martha:  “Luke doesn’t say she (Martha) was too busy…His word is ‘distracted’ — a word sometimes used as meaning to be physically pulled or dragged away from something.  The implication is that Martha had wanted to be with Jesus; that was her initial intent.  But she allowed herself to be prevented from doing that…The question is, who said she had to provide this high level of hospitality?”

“Spending the day with God does not usually involve doing different things from what we already do.  Mostly it involves learning to do what we already do in a new way — with God.”

The whole “live your day with God” thing is pretty interesting to me.  I’m a long way from where I want to be, but John’s book has helped me quite a bit.  I’ll tell you how tomorrow.

But Jesus’ answer to her request is as follows, And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.5 Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
