Volume 5, Issue 9 FYI E-Journal
September 1, 2009
Back to school.
For teenagers, “back to school” brings conflicting emotions. Excitement, anxiety, fear, and anticipation.
As a parent and youth worker, “back to school” also fills me with conflicting emotions — a sense of expectation but also wondering if I’ll end up overwhelmed.
In this FYI E-Journal, you’re getting resources to help you on your own “back to school” roller coaster. We take an honest look at the experiences of teenage guys in general, as well as offer an interview with Ben Stephens, an expert on ministry to African-American young men specifically. And if you need a break or know you’ll need a break sometime in the next few weeks, you’ve got two new personal retreat guides to help you connect with God — whether you have an hour or a full day.

Ben Stephens Interview
Kara Powell interviews Pastor Ben Stephens, minister to youth and young adults at West Angeles Church of God in Christ and Doctor of Ministry student at Fuller in the Youth, Family and Culture program. Ben shares about the opportunities and struggles facing African American young men.

Just Guys
Understanding and Escaping Guyland
If you’ve ever found yourself at a loss for how to understand and work with the guys in your youth ministry (or home!), this article offers clues to move beyond our culture’s typical excuses and fears. This is the first of a series of articles, podcasts, and blog posts about ministry with teen guys.

TWO Sabbath Retreat Guides
Yes, we know September is one of your busiest months. That’s exactly why we’re giving you these retreat guides now, as a way to begin building healthy rhythms into your ministry pace this year. Check out both guides for fresh ideas to pay attention to your life with God, whatever the season.
P.S.—Check out our newest video featuring Paul Craft on our Certificate in Urban Youth Ministry page! Applications for the 2010 Cohort will be accepted through November 20th 2009.
