Theological Therapy

Along with 40 youth workers from around the country, I am immersed in our weeklong FYI Urban Youth Ministry Certificate this week here at Fuller.  Here’s what one of our faculty members said a few days ago:

“The deeper into your humanity you go, the closer you come to the very threshold of all that is divine, which is exactly the opposite of how I was raised.  And it was exactly the opposite of the gospel I preached for 20 years.”

I feel like this week has been “theological therapy” for us (yes, it’s a term I just made up).  We’re taking a hard look at our theology and identifying parts of it that don’t match God’s true plan for us and our ministries.  I’m so proud of our students for doing the hard work – the hard emotional and mental work – of putting ourselves and our ministries under a magnifying glass.
