Swine Flu and the Poor

April 30, 2009

So yesterday the World Health Organization upgraded the swine flu epidemic from a 4 to a 5 (with 6 being the maximum).  All countries are encouraged to implement their pandemic protocols immediately.

I’m glad that as of the time I write this blog, only one death has been reported in the U.S.  But there are over 150 deaths reported in our neighbor Mexico.

The poor will end up being hit harder by swine flu than the not-poor.  Why?  They don’t have the same access to medicine, to adequate hygiene, and to medical personnel.

It grieves me that swine flu will likely be easier on the affluent than on the poor.  I hope it grieves us all.
