What’s Most Important

A few days ago I blogged about a really great phone conversation I had with a few sharp youth leaders from the same church. They called because their Sunday mornings have gotten a bit dry.

I asked them two questions that we are wrestling with in the youth ministry at our church, Lake Avenue Church:

1. When do we have the most students?

2. What are the most important 1-3 values in our youth ministry?

Our answer to #1 is Sunday mornings.

Our answer to #2 is (not counting justice work of course) relationships with adult leaders, relationships with friends, and growing in faith.

So we’re thinking about doing small groups on Sundays instead of midweek. Not only do we have three times as many students on Sundays as midweek, it’s also easier to recruit adult leaders for Sundays than midweek.

We’re trying to be smarter. And deeper. I love that about our youth staff. They’re willing to ask hard questions and correct mid-course if we’re not seeing the fruit we long for.
