Sabbath
March 30, 2009
This weekend I spoke at the Mother/Son Retreat at Forest Home. One of the many reasons I wanted to speak there was because I was able to bring our eight year-old son. Nathan and I had a PHENOMENAL time together.
Perhaps the best part of the weekend for Nathan and me was the Saturday afternoon free time. We had 4.5 hours, so we did the zip line, went trout fishing (he caught 2; I caught zero), got a chocolate chip milkshake, and played miniature golf. It was so nice to have 4 hours to do whatever we wanted to do.
That night I spoke to the moms about having a Sabbath. I realized this weekend that while I’m pretty consistent in having a Sabbath (it’s on Sundays for me now that I’m a volunteer and not employed at my church), I let my “to do” list creep in. Sundays have ended up being filled with trips to Home Depot and grocery store shopping. I love Eugene Peterson’s definition of a Sabbath as a time to “pray and play”. But somehow my Sabbaths have become a time to pray, play, and get caught up on everything I didn’t have a chance to do during the past week.
I’m pretty convinced that honoring the Sabbath is the most violated commandment by Christians and Christian leaders today. It’s one of God’s Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 after all. So my hope is that our family will re-think our Sabbath routine and have fewer errands and more time to truly pray and play. Wouldn’t it be great if we as leaders and parents could model Sabbath-ing for our kids?
