Your Most Powerful Sex Organ

February 2, 2009

It was one of my seminary professors who once said in a lecture about human sexuality, “Your most powerful sexual organ isn’t between your legs, it’s between your ears.”

As I have surveyed the most recent research on teenage sexuality, I am coming to agree with him.  According to studies done by the Kaiser Family Foundation, four out of five teenagers believe that people their age usually drink or use drugs before having sex.  Almost 1/3 of students have done more sexually under the influence of alcohol and drugs than they planned while sober.1

One of the major themes of FYI is that the church needs to minister to the whole kid.  As I’ve often said when discussing holistic ministry, “Yes, kids need us to lead Bible study, but they also need to learn how to read.”

When it comes to students’ sexuality, we need to similarly approach the topic more holistically.  There are links between a student’s sexuality and their approach to alcohol and drugs, their family, their willingness to delay gratification, the type of friends they have, the type of clothing they wear, the type of music, TV, and internet they watch, and on and on the list goes.

If you’re doing a series on sexuality during February (and we know many of you are), early on in your series, ask your students to think with you about the areas of their lives that are connected to their sexuality.  Stretch them to think about themselves and their sexuality more holistically.  The good news is that Jesus is transforming our whole person.
