We Never Slipped God’s Mind
October 20, 2008
As Christians, we love Jesus. And that’s a good thing. But as I’ve been reading The Mission of God by Dr. Christopher J.H. Wright, I’ve been reminded that there is more to God’s redemption than Jesus.
After Eden and Babel in Genesis 1-11, things look pretty bleak for the home team. But in Genesis 12:1-3, God makes the first of several promises to Abram, namely that God will make Abram into a great nation, and will make Abram’s name great. From the promised-and seemingly unlikely-offspring, God creates a people group that would play a vital role in God’s redemption of the world.
Sometimes we Christians act like God somehow forgot about saving the world for a few millennia until all of a sudden God thought, “Hey, I know. I can send my son, Jesus, to rescue humankind.” The reality is that God was involved in our salvation long before Jesus; God never forgot about us and we never slipped God’s mind.
Yes, Jesus is central to our salvation, but we see signs of God’s rescue throughout the Old Testament too-from Moses leading the Israelites to the Promised Land to God preserving a remnant in the midst of Israelite captivity.
That’s how much God loves us-and our students too.
