For those of us who work with teenagers, it doesn’t take a long list of statistics to prove that our world is broken. Mission trips, service projects, and supporting children through relief organizations are just a few of the ways that many of us engage our students in serving the least, the last, and the lost. As good and helpful as these things may be on the surface, that’s where they remain—at the surface. As you and I know, the problems run far deeper than an occasional paint job or fundraising project can solve. But it’s not hopeless. At FYI, we run into youth ministries who are taking radical steps to right the world around them.
Because we wanted you to learn from their stories, we are so pleased to announce that our second FYI book, Deep Justice in a Broken World (Zondervan, 2008) has hit the streets. To celebrate its release, we are dedicating this FYI E-Journal (as well as our previous issue in November 2007) to the theme of deep justice.
As you scroll below, you’ll get to read an excerpt from our book, as well as life-giving insights related to cross-cultural intelligence and developing leaders in the city. You’ll also have a chance to hear our audio interview with Dr. John Perkins, a national treasure of justice experience and expertise. For those of you just dying to download even more onto your new Christmas iPod, you can also check out newly-posted interviews with innovative and hands-on justice leaders like Lina Thompson, Alexie Torres-Fleming, and Anthony Flynn (and of course if you don’t have an iPod, you can simply click the links and listen on your computer). These interviews are found in the “Extra Resources” portion of the Deep Justice page on our website.
Here’s to a 2008 that helps our ministries dive deeper into Kingdom justice!

What’s the difference between service and justice, and what’s the big deal, anyway? Following their highly-acclaimed book Deep Ministry in a Shallow World, authors Chap Clark and Kara Powell invited a host of key justice-minded leaders to help craft Deep Justice in a Broken World, including Jim Wallis, Tony Campolo, Jeremy del Rio, Larry Acosta, and more. This article offers a snapshot from the book itself—a challenge to dig deeper into what it means to truly seek God’s justice through our youth ministries.

Training in cross-cultural communication used to be reserved for elite business leaders or career missionaries, but now it’s essential for all of us—even for your youth ministry! Check out this overview of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and interview with Dave Livermore, CQ guru. No matter what your ministry context, this paradigm shift is guaranteed to stir changes in the way you approach cross cultural interaction.

by Jude Tiersma Watson
What is the city’s greatest hope? While God works through all sorts of leaders, perhaps the greatest hope for the city comes from those who grow up in the city and and choose to stay there as indigenous leaders. Urban practitioner and researcher Jude Tiersma Watson explores the model of urban leadership development as a way to raise up leaders in your—and their—context.

by Kara Powell and FYI
Through a partnership with World Vision and thanks to a generous grant from a private foundation, FYI has developed a year’s worth of customizable resources for Bible study, worship, discussion, and engagement for any youth worker who wants to increase students’ interaction with issues related to hunger and poverty and equip them to live out kingdom-of-God responses. If you did not take advantage of these resources in 2007, now you can choose from among 12 free curriculum ideas throughout 2008!
